"Are you ready, I want to know, when the power goes out and the strong winds blow?"

You should have a disaster supplies kit in your home with items you need in case the electricity, water, or gas goes out, or in case you need to leave your home.  Store the supplies in sturdy, easy-to-carry containers such as backpacks or duffle bags. Pack your kit together as a family, so everyone knows its importance.

"All the items you need in your kit"

1. A 3-day supply of water (one gallon per person per day) and food that won't spoil. (Have a hand-operated can opener too!
2. Food and water and a carrier for your pet.
3. A change of clothing and footwear per person and one blanket or sleeping bag per person.
4. A first-aid kit, including prescription medicines.
5. Emergency tools, including a battery-powered NOAA Weather Radio and a portable radio, flashlight, and plenty of extra batteries.
6. An extra set of car keys, a credit card and and cash (small bills).
7. Moist towelettes, toothbrush, toothpaste, soap.
8. Special items for infant, elderly or disabled family members.
9. Important family documents in a waterproof container-birth certificates, passports, social security cards, inventory of valuables.

Key words in the Song:
"When nature lashes out, you'll rest assured that you can take a hit You're ready for the worst, if you've collected first All the items you need in your kit."

Talk with Your Friends and Your Family:
1. Why do you need an emergency kit?
2. What are the most important items to put in your kit?
3. When do you know it's time to use items from your kit?
