At The Weather Channel, Nick has been a part of the major weather stories in recent history, warning residents in the southern U.S. during extended coverage of the April 27, 2011 “Super-Outbreak,” breaking the record for the most tornadoes recorded in 24 hours. He brought life-saving information as significant historic hurricanes made landfall, including Floyd (1999) Charlie and Frances (2004), Katrina, Rita and Wilma (2005), Ike (2008), and Isaac (2012).
In addition to his live broadcasts, Nick served as the designated narrator for The Weather Channel’s “Forecast Earth” series as well as numerous other hour-long specials including “Storms of the Century,” “Vulnerable Cities,” “After the Storm,” and “Hot Planet.”
Nick is an active member of the National Weather Association, twice serving a term as councilor, and is the former chair of the organization’s Broadcast Committee. He holds the NWA TV Seal of Approval and is an American Meteorological Society Certified Broadcast Meteorologist. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has recognized Nick as a Weather-Ready Nation Ambassador, committed to improving the nation's readiness against extreme weather, water, and climate events.
Nick holds a certificate in Broadcast Meteorology from Mississippi State University and was a Magna Cum Laude graduate of the University of North Texas where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in Communications.
Nick is author of Sing Along with the Weather Dude, a book and CD for children and Don’t Get Scared, Just Get Prepared, a CD of weather songs to teach severe weather preparedness. Nick performs his “Weather Dude” program for school children and families at festivals and science fairs throughout the country. A singer and songwriter, Nick has recorded several albums of original music. He has made cameo appearances on “Late Night with David Letterman” (see video here) and “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart,” and in the finale of “The Gilmore Girls, Sally Struthers’ character Babette confessed that she is “a Nick Walker fan.” (See video here.)
